Film 116 Final Drift Video

Final video for drifts from Film 116:

Ten Questions

1.) What objects will create the best sounds when struck?
2.) What parts of the city have i not explored before?
3.) What architecture is very detailed, or interesting close up?
4.) Where can i find symmetry in buildings?
5.) What stair railings have interesting lines?
6.) What terrain would be interesting to traverse with still shot montage?
7.) Where will I not find any other people?
8.) How long can I stay on one block and keep finding interesting things to photograph?
9.) What interesting movements can i make with the video camera?
10.) Where can I find interesting shadows?

Drift 3 Production Strategy

1.) After going to place in my home town that I have visited many times before on my first two drifts, I wanted to do something different for Drift 3. I had made a conscious decision to go to parts of Port Washington that I had not been to before, in such a small town, I was surprised at how many streets I had never traveled down. This is what got me to explore the area around St. Mary's church. I also explored the down town, which I have been through many times before, but because of the current state of construction, and how the entire street was shut down, it was a completely new experience for me.

2.) My image strategy is to find the little pieces that make up the 'big picture' that we often overlook. I'll focus on close-ups that can be later edited together to form a cohesive video.

3.) My goal is to capture rhythm, either naturally occurring or man made, as I had good luck capturing audio of this type in my first drift. Whether it's drumming on the side of a building or a stair railing with my hands or sticks.

Favorite Drifting Experience

My favorite experience whilst drifting happened on my first drift walk; the one where I recorded sounds for the first time. It was freezing out; low 20's. It had just been warm in the few days prior though so there was huge puddles from melting snow and ice, and now they were frozen solid. After a while i became too cold to even feel anything at all, and I had to be very cautious of where I stepped so that I didn't slip and fall. At this point from the stress and the cold my body basically became numb to everything but the sound coming through my headphones. I was able to just stand and let the conscious world fade into the background and just listen for any sounds. This opened up a whole world of sounds that i would have overlooked before in a normal state of mind. I believe I captured some very interesting sounds because of this, and could devote all my attention to capturing them.
